The Foundations of Naturopathic Medicine

The practice of Naturopathic Medicine has developed from six main principles. The concepts that form the foundations of Naturopathic Medicine are:   

1. The Healing Power of Nature - Central to the practice of Naturopathic Medicine is the belief that the body has an innate ability to heal itself if given the proper support, environment, and encouragement. The main focus of Naturopathic Medicine is to support and strengthen the body to achieve a level of health where it can heal and balance itself. 

2. Treat the Whole Person - Central to the practice of Naturopathic Medicine is the belief that the whole person - the body, mind and spirit - needs to be addressed when working towards an improved level of health. 

3. Address the Root Cause - Central to the practice of Naturopathic Medicine is the belief that the root of a person's concerns must be treated rather than only the symptoms, which are generally a reflection of the root. It is believed that the root must be addressed to achieve a long lasting improvement in a person's level of health. 

4. Do No Harm - Central to the practice of Naturopathic Medicine is the belief that the healing modalities used to address a person's concerns must be supportive of health and must be non-toxic and non-invasive. 

5. Naturopath as Teacher - Central to the practice of Naturopathic Medicine is the belief that the Naturopath's main role is as a teacher. It is believed that the Naturopath offers information, support, and guidance to a person as they work towards healing and their health goals. 

6. Prevention - Central to the practice of Naturopathic Medicine is the belief in the importance of prevention. Naturopathic Medicine seeks to support the body's health to a level where it becomes less susceptible to disease processes.
